Smithsonian Folklife Festival

July 8, 2014

It's strange that I've been living in the suburbs around D.C. for all my life but that only this summer have I heard of the Folklife Festival run annually by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. The festival ran from Wednesday to Sunday for two weeks in late June and early July. As a volunteer I worked on different days with several different teams: audio documentation, translation at the China Textiles tent, recycling and compost.

The festival was extremely memorable to me personally due to this extraordinary music ensemble from Inner Mongolia, without a doubt my favorite part of the whole spanking thing:

I've been obnoxiously showing all my co-workers and friends my phone's camera roll from the days of the festival.

On a related note, the weather in D.C. on Jul. 4 was marvelous. I can't explain how amazing it was through this keyboard.

Remaking a high school newspaper

May 16, 2014

I'm currently in the midst of creating an entirely new design for my high school's bi-weekly newspaper, Common Sense. Here's what I have so far:

The new front and opinion pages (with fictional or outdated content). I've standardized all the typefaces, layout elements, and positions of where exactly each module is placed. By now we're working on our last issue of the (school) year. I'm hoping to implement these changes with the first issue of next year's volume 44, for which I also have a few excellent opinion piece ideas.
